Statement of Solidarity with Griffith University’s International Students Affected by the Liaoning Disasters
The Student Representative Council stands in solidarity with our students and their families who have been affected by the severe flooding and storm damage in Liaoning Province, China.
In recent weeks, Typhoon Bavi has brought torrential rain and widespread flooding to cities across Liaoning, including Shenyang and Fushun, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate their homes, disrupting communities, and causing significant loss of life and damage to homes, schools, and infrastructure.
We recognise that for members of our university community with family, friends, or hometowns in the affected region, this has been an anxious and painful time, made harder by distance and the difficulty of following events from afar while managing study and daily responsibilities here in Australia.
We want to remind all students that support is available, including:
- Academic considerations – extensions, deferred assessments, or other flexible arrangements for students whose studies have been affected. Please reach out to the advocacy team if you need support.
- Counselling and wellbeing services – free, confidential support is available through Griffith’s student wellbeing services.
- Community connection – Our clubs, international student networks and Griffith International are a source of mutual support, and we encourage students to lean on one another during this time.
We stand with our Liaoning and broader Chinese student community, and we remain committed to providing whatever support we can as recovery efforts continue.
