The SRC stands with the childcare staff and parents and demands that Griffith University reverse its decision.

On the 16th of October, Griffith announced that it will close its not-for-profit childcare centres on the Nathan campus, Boronia, and Tallowood on December 17th.

This move leaves 100 children without care and makes 30 staff members redundant. The centres will be sold to private providers, and are expected to reopen in Q2 2026.

This is a blatant attack on the staff members of the centres, students on placement, university employees and local workers such as those at QEII Hospital who utilise the childcare services. It will disproportionately affect mothers and single parents, who, with short notice, will have to find new childcare, likely at a higher cost.

The university has claimed this as part of its review of “assets that no longer align with our core mission of delivering high-quality tertiary education and research”. It is clear that this is a cynical cost-cutting measure, which has been undertaken along with a series of other recent cuts, aiming at securing the University’s profit margins.
