SRC and GUPSA Statement of Solidarity with Griffith Staff and the NTEU

You may have heard that some Griffith staff have been refusing to work for periods of time, also known as striking or taking Protected Industrial Action (PIA). The SRC and GUPSA are thoroughly in support of this.

The EBA is part of what sets conditions, rates of pay, and work requirements for staff. These conditions agreements also drastically affect students. For instance, some schools restrict course convenors to as little as 40 minutes marking per student per course.

Griffith staff representatives are being supported in getting the best possible EBA by their colleagues at the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU). Despite having had staff demands for months, the management is refusing to support staff and the students who they teach.

To show management that staff aren’t settling for an exploitative EBA that puts student support last, Protected Industrial Action is taking place.

Current Protected Industrial Action includes:

  • Work stoppages at varying times
  • Refusal to work outside paid hours
  • Refusal to use specific online systems
  • More are coming if management refuses to put staff and students over profit

Show your support

On Tuesday, the 22nd of September, there will be a half-day work stoppage. Griffith Staff and the NTEU are putting on a BBQ from 12pm to 1:30pm outside the N22 theatres (Chill and Grill BBQ).

Free sausages and drinks will be available for all staff and students who choose to participate. Come along if you’re interested, hungry, or want to show management that you support staff and value your education!
