Period Positivity Project

What is the Period Positivity Program?

Missing university due to the inability to afford period products can severely impact students’ educational achievement and productivity. Therefore, reducing period poverty is important for policymakers, education and community service providers.

Since 2023, the SRC and GUPSA have partnered with Libra to provide free period care products to students. Griffith will be one of the first Universities in Queensland to bring this in.

The benefits of taking action to reduce period poverty have the potential to positively impact students’ educational engagement and attainment, health outcomes and future opportunities by:

  • Reducing university absenteeism
  • Reducing shame and embarrassment associated with menstruation
  • Improving emotional and mental health (e.g. feeling less worried about having their period)
  • Improving physical health and reducing vulnerability to RTIs (Reproductive Tract Infections) and PIDs (Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases), and other complications
