Isa Bowen

Team: Students Collective

Degree: Political Science and International Relations

Campus: Brisbane South (Nathan)

Hi, I’m Isa (they/them) – I’m a Political Science and International Relations student. I study at Nathan Campus, and I’m running with the Students Collective to deliver real outcomes both in our classrooms and in our communities.
 
That means a more transparent, supportive, and representative university while also using our platforms to advocate for social justice beyond workshop rooms or lecture halls.
 
Some of the main policies I want to fight for on campus is establishing a more student democracy by fighting for more elected student representatives and less appointed representatives. Additionally dedicated creative arts representative for the Academic Committee because our creative arts students deserve a voice. Finally more clubs funding and support to help enhance student life and student experience on campus.
 
Off campus, I want the SRC to take a strong and resolute stand on Palestinian political expression and the BDS movement across Australia. Additionally, the SRC needs to stand up on trans justice here in Queensland by ensuring the SRC takes practical policy measures that enhance student wellbeing such as Gender-based healthcare bursaries while also advocating off campus for trans rights across the whole community.
 
With your support, we can put student life and activism at the heart of our university, fighting for social justice off and on campus, and that can only be done by voting for Students Collective this SRC election.

Fereshta Rezaie

I am Fereshta Rezaie, an undergraduate nursing student at Griffith University, and I am nominating for the Student Representative Council because I want to help ensure that students from all backgrounds feel heard, supported and included in our university community. As a student, I understand that university life can bring challenges beyond studying, including financial pressure, balancing work and education, adjusting to university life, and finding the right support when it is needed. I believe every student should have a fair opportunity to participate, succeed and feel that they belong at Griffith.

Through my nursing studies and previous work experience with the Australian Bureau of Statistics during the Census, I have developed strong communication, teamwork, organisation and interpersonal skills. I am comfortable communicating with people from diverse backgrounds, listening to different perspectives and working responsibly as part of a team. Being fluent in two languages has also strengthened my appreciation of the importance of clear communication and inclusion.

If elected to the SRC, I would listen to students and advocate for practical initiatives that make university life more accessible and supportive. I am particularly interested in student wellbeing, cost-of-living pressures, academic support and creating greater awareness of the services available to students. I would bring a positive, responsible and approachable attitude to the SRC and would be proud to represent the voices and experiences of Griffith students.

Kyle Low

Team: Socialist Action

My name is Kyle, and I’m a socialist activist. I have been involved in the campaign for Palestine for the past three years, and this year I have helped organise the student strikes against Pauline Hanson.
 
Over the past two years, I have also been elected on the SRC. In this time, I organised the student referendum for Palestine, in which 5000 students across the country voted for our government to cut ties with and sanction Israel, and the ‘no cuts’ campaign, which garnered over 1300 signatures against the University’s course and staff cuts.
 
I think we need an SRC which is willing to fight for students’ and staff’s rights, and for political questions that students care about. We need to combat the root issues of the problems students face, including the cost of living crisis, the rampant far right, and the lack of funding to the university sector.
 
We can’t appeal to the university bosses for help, or the government, students need to fight for their rights, and the rights of the oppressed.
 
Vote for Socialist Action if you want an active, left-wing SRC to represent you.

Sebastian Ward-Chadwick

I’m Sebastian. I’m a Journalism and Political Science student, and I’m the president of the Griffith Greens.
 
I’m nominating for SRC because I believe in an SRC that fights for student interests.
 
Student politics has a terrible reputation. Dodgy deals, ugly backstabbing, and comical mismanagement are commonplace. I hate it. I want Griffith to be different. I want to build trust and establish proper working relationships so the SRC can get to do its actual job: delivering outcomes for students.
 
Now is an important time for the SRC to be active. We’ve seen the state government attempting to silence the mostly student-led Palestine movement with restrictions on free speech. We’ve seen the independence of the UQ student union under threat. And we’ve seen rising fascism and anti-democratic movements all over the world, including in this country.
 
For now, these things are yet to affect Griffith directly, which means we have an opportunity to set an example and build a more positive form of student government that puts student-centric decisions ahead of personal ambition. Which is also why I’ve partnered with Students Collective, a collection of progressive student groups both political and non-political, so I’m accountable to everyone, not just to a single party.
 
As part of Students Collective, I’ll also be fighting to deliver greater transparency for the SRC, an investigation into the quality of student accommodation, and more funding for clubs and the student pantry.

Diya Odedra

Hi! I’m an international student, studying my second year in IT at Nathan. As a full time student it can be hard for me to balance everything from work to uni. Because of that if voted in I want to make 5-day automatic extensions available to everyone.

James Clouston

You should be able to walk around campus feeling safe, no matter the time of day. This is not the case, and the previous SRC members have failed to address this critical issue.
 
My name is James Clouston, and I am a first-year Communications student running for SRC. I have been in several leadership positions, both at school and in the workforce. If you don’t see me around campus, I’m probably volunteering at Foodbank or in the newsroom. Other candidates have focused on ideology and politics; Harry and I will deliver on our promises and will spearhead a full security overhaul, so everyone can finally feel safe on campus.
 
If elected, I pledge to attend every single SRC catch-up meeting with the Griffith Journal, a meeting that other sitting members have failed to attend.
 
I promise to finally fix the inadequate and broken lighting around campus, push for cheaper parking, advocate for improved after-hours security, and make SRC meetings open to the public and press, so you can hold us to account.
 
The cost-of-living crisis has hit us all, which is why we will push for an increase in food relief and have closer ties with charities. The Safety team will lobby for TransLink to increase bus frequency to all campuses, so you can get to your classes and to your home on time.
 
I value your attention, and I implore you to use your vote wisely.

We need more student militancy and activism to combat the right-wing rise in politics both on and off campus. Students deserve the right to have their say in politics, and to speak out against the conservative shift we’re seeing today.
 
For over a year I’ve been a student activist, helping build rally’s for Palestine, participating in the march of more than 50,000 people in Brisbane, and protesting against the rise of Pauline Hanson and One Nation.
 
The student body need an SRC that are fighting for them.

Moving from Sydney to Brisbane straight out of high school has been tough for me, but with the support that the SRC already give me, it’s been able to get me through. That’s why I want to double the meal drops that go to the three campuses, so you have the option to eat better and cheaper.

Spencer Holzheimer

Hi I’m Spencer.
I’m a proud Domestic Violence survivor and current independent chair of the Student Representative Council.
 
The Students Collective started from the simple idea that a group of like-minded progressive students coming together for common goals is the most effective way to get results for our community without the baggage of traditional politics. A group that stands for shared progressive values and delivers real results while ensuring all members can vote and act however they think is best for the community. And over recent months, I’ve brought together leaders from across the community willing to make it happen.
 
In my time on the SRC, I’ve supported protests on key social issues like Palestine and gender equality, and worked to build the Student Representative Council that students deserve by working to establish a conflict of interest process for student representatives, built clear frameworks on how to fight for students, and took the fight to the university every single time by taking positions on internal university committees to hold them accountable at their own meetings.
 
The Students Collective will be running for positions on both the SRC and university committees to fight for our ambitious agenda.
Our goals are to deliver gender-based healthcare bursaries, increased funding for clubs, an independent investigation into the quality of student accommodation across all campuses, more elected student representatives on decision-making bodies inside the university, and a permanent strategy to deliver transparency across our community by establishing a clear ‘Right to know’ doctrine.

Meillyn-Knala Maher

I am nominating for the Griffith SRC because I am passionate about student representation, good governance and ensuring diverse voices are heard in decisions that affect our university community.
 
I am a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) student, with strong interests in advocacy, social justice and First Nations issues. I am particularly passionate about ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are meaningfully represented and that the diversity and complexity of First Nations experiences are recognised and respected.
 
I bring significant leadership and governance experience to the role. In 2022, I was appointed as a Non-Executive Director of Weipa Bulk Fuels PTY LTD, a Supply Nation recognised Indigenous Joint Venture – I remain in this role. I have completed the Foundations of Directorship course through the Australian Institute of Company Directors and am a current AICD member. Alongside my governance experience, I have held numerous managerial and leadership positions across hospitality, retail, childcare and entertainment.
 
These experiences have taught me the importance of listening, understanding diverse perspectives and advocating constructively for the people I represent. As an SRC representative, I want to bring my experience to student advocacy by listening to students, identifying the issues that matter and working towards practical, meaningful outcomes. I am particularly committed to strengthening First Nations representation and ensuring students have a genuine voice in university decision-making.
 
I want to be a representative who doesn’t simply hold a position, but ensures students are heard, respected and meaningfully involved in the decisions that shape their university experience.

Gigi Bruno

I’m Gigi, and I’m a first year law and environmental science student.

Over the last year, with the increased cost of living, I’ve relied on meal drops so I can meal plan for the week. This has been such a lifesaver for me and many other students. That’s why if elected I’ll double the meal drops that go to each campus, so everyone can make their lives easier.

As a student who never misses any of the free food support sessions, both in Nathan and Southbank campuses, I would say I really enjoyed each session; however, I have also found some issues. What I’m really keen to gain from the SRC, if I’m selected as an SRC Member, is experience in governance, including designing food support and other program services through hands-on work on campus.

Hence, my ultimate goal as an SRC member would be to keep improving food support programs from the perspective of one of Griffith University’s students.

Hi, I’m Annelise and I’m a socialist activist running with Socialist Action this SRC election!
 
We need a revival of student and trade union activism in order to stand up against the far-right, sexism, racism, and all forms of oppression. We’re affected by politics every single day and the campus is no exception.
 
I’ve helped organise and build protests for Palestine and against the far-right. At the Brisbane contingent of the historic national anti-Hanson student strike I spoke to a crowd of over a thousand against her disgusting sexism. Sexist politics are on the rise and we should take seriously the threats against our rights like access to abortion, and be ready to fight back.
 
Students deserve an SRC that will stand up for the political issues that face us every day.

My name’s Kore, I’m a socialist activist on campus. For years I’ve been involved in building rallies on and off campus and getting more students involved. I was a part of the campaign to free refugees from hotel detention in Brisbane, rallies to defend trans rights and abortion rights, and took part in the 50,000 people march across Brisbane for Palestine.
 
During my time on the SRC, I organised and led the campaign against the University’s course restructures that saw over 200 staff sacked and countless courses cut. Our university is run like a business that puts its own profits above the quality of our education. I want to fight for a university that is about learning about the world and how to make it a better place, not a degree factory for the uni bosses to pad their pockets.
 
I think our SRC should be an activist body that fights against attacks on students. Whether it’s from the university attacking the quality of our education or the far-right’s disgusting racism. We need an SRC that will stand up for students.

After working nearly 4 years for a multinational financial services firm, I decided in January to go on a long career break, so I could focus on my studies and share my experience and corporate know-how with other students. To help prepare them for the real world.
 
Yet, throughout my time at Griffith’s Nathan and South Bank campuses, I felt a lingering emptiness, like something was missing. Then it hit me: Nathan and South Bank have DON’T HAVE a dedicated Karaoke Machine :O
 
Ever since, my mission has been to get a dedicated karaoke machine for Nathan and South Bank. With your nomination, I personally vow and swear on my wallet and my ancestors’ souls (in case I need to make a deal with the devil) to do whatever it takes to get a machine and enable students at our campuses to build their confidence and hone their singing abilities!

Harry McClure

Hi, I’m Harry, a second-year law and polisci student and am running for the SRC. If I’m not at the library studying, I’m with my boyfriend having a wine or binge-watching Boston Legal. I’m not interested in hot-topic political issues like the Socialists are and won’t funnel student money into private businesses like Revitalise does.

I promise to put your money where my mouth is and provide directly to students, instead of advocating to be paid like some current representatives think. If I’m elected, I promise to advocate for more healthy and real food at the student pantry, to fix the lighting around the university to help students feel safer on campus, provide more events to support students with the cost of living, and advocate for real safety, support, and services. Coming from a Centrelink family myself, I know how hard student life can get, and frankly, the support provided by the current SRC is unacceptable.

Instead of supporting students, they’ve opted for EXPENSIVE gyg, fitting the uni bar with televisions so THEY can watch the footy, and wasting time in SRC meetings to talk about their OWN organised protests. A vote for me is a vote against the selfish ambitions of the current SRC and a vote for actual representation of students. The SRC should not be involved in dodgy political deals and instead serve as a platform for students to express their needs.

Nargis Afzally

I am a Law and Politics student, interested and deeply devoted to issues surrounding climate change, feminism and gender inequality, human rights internationally and domestically, and health and social welfare. Within and outside of my studies, I remain committed to educating myself further and advocating for rights in all areas of our community.
 
My goal is to integrate new sustainable initiatives, raise awareness on key issues, and be a strong, dedicated advocate for all students. At Griffith Nathan, we are an extremely sustainable and green community, however, I intend to champion more objectives to further improve and expand our low-impact efforts. 

For example, campus food sharing schemes inspired by “Too Good to Go” to tackle food waste and cost of living for uni students; launch “Green Impact” sustainability challenges for students and student clubs to participate in to improve campus litter/waste mitigation; a “Free Pool” network for textbooks and other education essentials to supply students struggling or in need of materials.
 
These are just some of the small sustainable initiatives I intend to bring alongside SRC to Griffith to support students.
 
As part of Students Collective, the policies my fellow members and I intend to adopt will reflect that of all students at Griffith, preserving independence and autonomy, ensuring that all students are heard equally – regardless of political affiliation.
